The Metropolitan Division-leading Carolina Hurricanes (35-15-6, 76 points) visit the last-place New York Rangers (22-28-6, 50 points) on Thursday night as the teams close out their pre-Olympic break schedules at Madison Square Garden.

Jordan Staal scored with 5:07 remaining as Carolina topped the visiting Ottawa Senators 4-3 on Tuesday night. The Hurricanes led 3-1 on Seth Jarvis’ second goal of the game with 4:19 remaining in the second period before Ottawa rallied to tie it up early in the third. Sebastian Aho finished with a goal and two assists in the win.

Alexis Lafreniere posted two goals and an assist, but the Rangers’ comeback bid fell short on Saturday as the Rangers lost their third straight game and fell to 1-6-0 in their last seven with a 6-5 road loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Vincent Trochek, Vladislav Gavrikov, and Will Cuylle also scored for New York, with Cuylle’s tally cutting the deficit to a single goal with 11 seconds remaining.

The Hurricanes have taken two of three from New York as the teams close out their season series, winning 3-0 at MSG on Nov. 4 and taking a 3-2 overtime win at home on Dec. 29. The Rangers got a 4-2 road win on Nov. 26. Jarvis leads Carolina with 25 goals while Aho and Andrei Svechnikov check in with 20 apiece. Aho tops the squad with 57 points. Brandon Bussi is 22-3-1 with a shutout to go with a .904 save percentage and 2.24 goals against average. 

Mika Zibanejad’s 23 goals and 52 points top the Rangers with Artemi Panarin sidelined, with J.T. Miller posting 14 goals. Jonathan Quick is the No. 1 goalie with Igor Shesterkin on injured reserve, and he is 4-13-2 with a shutout, an .883 save percentage, and 3.22 GAA.
