NHL Insider David Pagnotta reveals why the Artemi Panarin trade to the Detroit Red Wings fell through.

It seemed as if the Detroit Red Wings were on the cusp of greatness with an effort to acquire forward Artemi Panarin in a trade. A historic market, for a big-name Russian star, it seemed as if it was fate.

A big market for a player whose profile has increased as years progress.

There were multiple teams involved in an attempt to acquire Panarin, including the Red Wings. The list was extensive, with the Washington Capitals, Tampa Bay Lightning, Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, and Dallas Stars.

But what was the main reason the deal fell through between Detroit and Panarin?

The lack of extension available was the reason why he opted to head to the West Coast.

The Detroit Red Wings miss out on Artemi Panarin

The latest news is that Panarin is working on a contract extension with the Kings’ general manager, Ken Holland.

This could turn into another “coulda, woulda, shoulda” situation where Yzerman could look in the mirror and think of whether or not he should’ve prioritized splurging on Panarin or not.

It’s true his $11.6 million contract is hefty, but with what he can do with a puck, it’s why he gets paid the big bucks.

Or maybe he’s waiting for his next trade target in March, when the trade cycle ramps up.

Either way, the Red Wings missed out on Artemi Panarin.
