Flames forward Ryan Lomberg took a jab at Oilers goalie Tristan Jarry.

The Edmonton Oilers felt that the time had come to make an upgrade to their goaltending, and they swapped Stuart Skinner to the Pittsburgh Penguins along with defenseman Brett Kulak for Tristan Jarry and Sam Poulin.

So far, the trade have produced almost polar opposite results. Skinner has rediscovered his game and posted an impressive 7-1 record with a 2.13 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage during the month of January.

Meanwhile, Jarry was hurt during just his third start with the Oilers, and while he’s compiled a 6-4-1 record since the trade, his goals-against average and save percentage leave plenty to be desired.

Edmonton’s 4-3 loss to the Calgary Flames on Wednesday evening was their final game before the three-week Olympic break; during the contest, Jarry surrendered four goals on 25 shots against.

Afterward, Flames forward Ryan Lomberg took a not-so-subtle jab at the performance of Jarry, equating him to “Swiss cheese”.

“I do like swiss cheese on my pizza,” he joked. “So there’s a little bit of that there.”

He was immediately asked if he was referencing the subpar performance by Jarry, and he acknowledged it while chuckling.

“Yeah,” he said, holding back laughter. “Attaboy! Attaboy.”

Edmonton Oilers Goaltender Tristan Jarry Is Still Trying To Discover His Game

While there’s still plenty of time between now and the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the stats that Jarry has posted since joining the Oilers in the aforementioned trade from the Penguins in December haven’t exactly been encouraging.

Nobody knows this more than Jarry, who admitted that his game isn’t where it should be and that there’s plenty of room for improvement.

“It’s tough,” Jarry said. “I think I could have made some more saves. I think ultimately, if I can keep that game at two, we come out with a better outcome. I think I could have played better at the start, and I think that’ll be the case going forward.”

“I think it starts with me. I think I could be more accountable, and I think I could play better. I think if I play better and stand in there strong for these guys, I think we’ll have some better outcomes. I think it starts with me, and I think I just have to be better moving forward.”

Overall since joining the Oilers, Jarry has gone 6-4-1 while posting a 3.46 goals-against average, a .869 save percentage, and one shutout.

Tristan Jarry Believes The Olympic Break Will Serve The Oilers Well

Jarry believes that the Olympic break, which is now underway, will ultimately be a good thing for the Oilers.

“We have to use the break,” Jarry said. “I think that’s the whole point of it. We have most of the team, so we’ll be able to establish some good practices. We’ll be able to get some rest, a little bit of a reset, and I think just coming back, we’ll be able to work on some of those things that we might not have been able to just with the condensed schedule. I think ultimately, it’ll do everyone good.”

The Oilers, who missed a chance to gain ground on the division-leading Vegas Golden Knights, will next play on Feb. 25 against the Anaheim Ducks.
