Let’s be honest, Patrik Laine’s situation is starting to look like a pretty tough hot potato for Kent Hughes to handle.
The big winger didn’t move before the first NHL trade freeze, but we can agree there’s no urgent rush at the moment.
The Canadiens won’t be back on the ice until February 26, which leaves a 19-day window to maneuver.
Until the next practice on February 17, the club is completely off.
According to the latest rumours, Hughes could take advantage of the end of the freeze on February 22 to resolve the situation before the first game after the break
“Laine would be one of the few legitimate offensive rentals remaining on the board, and the expectation is that he will be traded prior to the Canadiens’ return at home on February 26.”
– Marco D’Amico
It’s important to note that there is interest, particularly from the Edmonton Oilers and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Waiting until after the freeze allows Laine’s future team to save on his actual salary, since Geoff Molson is paying him at 100% for almost the entire month of February.
Eric Engels of Sportsnet appears to agree with this waiting strategy.
“If the 27-year-old Finn sees any post-Olympics action, we expect it to be for someone other than the Canadiens.”
– Eric Engels
Hughes likely already has a destination in mind and is simply waiting for the right moment to get his price.
With an $8.7 million cap hit, clearing that space before March 6 would provide enormous flexibility moving forward.
