Will No. 23 make it 23 gold medals for the Detroit Red Wings at the Winter Olympic Games?
Lucas Raymond is No. 23 in the program for the Red Wings, and he’ll be a key performer for Sweden when the Olympic hockey tournament gets underway later this week in Italy.

Perhaps it will be captain Dylan Larkin who garners the gold medal for Detroit while playing for the USA. Or it could be Moritz Seider who delivers the goods with Germany. The Germans are certainly long shots to win gold, but it’s wise to remember that Germany skated away with the silver medal from the 2018 Winter Games.
Filppula Latest Red Wings To Win Gold
At the 2022 Winter Games, former Red Wings forward Valtteri Filppula became the 22nd player with Detroit ties to win an Olympic gold medal. Filppula was also the 17th player among this group to have won a Stanley Cup to go with their golden moment.

Frank Fredrickson and Slim Halderson (Canada, 1920) were gold medalists at the inaugural Olympic hockey tournament. Both were also original Detroit Cougars during the 1926-27. In fact, Halderson scored the first goal in franchise history.

Griffins On An Olympic Roll
It’s not just the Red Wings who’ve enjoyed Olympic success. The Grand Rapids Griffins, AHL affiliates of the Red Wings, also own an impressive string of Olympian efforts.
At the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, both Filppula and Finnish goaltender Harri Sateri of the gold medal-winning Finns were former Griffins players. Former Grand Rapids netminder Patrik Rybar won a bronze medal with Slovakia.
It marked the fifth consecutive Olympics in which at least one Griffins alum stood on the medal podium.
Griffins forward Eduards Tralmaks is playing for Latvia in Italy. Both Larkin and Seider are former Grand Rapids players.
