When the Vancouver Canucks were able to retain All-Star Brock Boeser this offseason, the signing came as a big surprise to many around the NHL. The vast majority of people around the league believed that Boeser was long gone and that Vancouver wouldn’t spend to keep him around.
But the Cancuks’ front office seemed to make something work with the star wing, and he inked a 7-year, $50.75 million contract with the team. Keeping Boeser around was huge for Vancouver, and it gave this team a renewed sense of optimism following a rough year that saw them just miss the playoffs.
However, fast forward to where things currently stand, and the Canucks are one of the worst teams in the entire NHL. With the NHL trade deadline looming in a few weeks, there have been all sorts of rumors flying about how Vancouver can reshape the roster.
Due to the lack of success this season, we could see the Canucks look to take some big swings, potentially even moving guys deemed untouchable at one point. Vancouver can’t afford to keep the salary cap as high as it has been, especially if the results on the ice aren’t where they need to be.
Canucks Making Some Roster Changes?
Recently, NHL insider Thomas Drance of The Athletic reported that Vancouver could be looking into potentially trading away some players who have long-term contracts on the books. The Canucks want to fix the salary cap situation, and guys such as Boeser or Conor Garland could be traded for the right price.
“For now, we know that the Canucks are “listening.” And I can add that among this veteran group of eight players, I sense that Garland — whose no-move clause doesn’t kick in until July 1 — and Boeser should be considered the most likely of Vancouver’s veteran players who could realistically be moved before the deadline,” wrote Drance.

Brock Boeser Traded to Detroit Red Wings
While the Canucks may only be listening on trades for someone like Boeser, moving the All-Star could benefit this team long-term. If Vancouver does seriously pursue a move of Boeser, a team like the Detroit Red Wings could be one of the stronger trade destinations.
The Red Wings did show some interest in Boeser over the offseason before he returned to Vancouver. This could be a way to finally land the All-Star, giving this squad more firepower.
Detroit is looking to finally end a very long playoff drought, and right now, they seem to be in a strong position to make it happen. But the Red Wings’ front office also wants to truly contend for a Stanley Cup this year, so being active at the trade deadline could help make it a reality.
If this team could add Boeser to the mix, it would give them the extra offensive boost that they’ve been looking for. For the year with the Canucks, Boeser has scored 12 goals and put up 13 assists, playing in 50 games.
Last season, the veteran scored 25 goals and had 25 assists, playing in 75 regular-season games. Boeser is on pace for another strong year, and he could be the missing piece to this Red Wings squad.
Trading for Boeser could cost the Red Wings a decent amount, but it could be worthwhile after over a decade of being at the bottom of the NHL standings. Overall, Detroit has its eyes set on a postseason spot, and Boeser could push them over the top.
