8-Game Point Streak for Tyson Dyck
Tyson Dyck is riding an eight-game scoring streak and is having his best season in the NCAA. He has already surpassed last year’s point total and currently sits at 5 goals and 9 assists. This is encouraging news for the Senators, as another draft pick is showing real progression in his game this season.
Prior to this year, Dyck had a difficult college career and struggled to find consistent offensive production. His freshman season at UMass resulted in just nine points, and after transferring to Wisconsin for his sophomore year, he continued to struggle to make a major impact. His best season before this year came last season, when he recorded 13 points.
With six regular-season games remaining, Dyck still has time to further demonstrate his ability to produce consistently in what is his fourth year as a college senior. Under NCAA regulations, players are limited to four years of eligibility. Dyck is producing at the right time, and hopefully for his sake, he can continue this momentum through the Frozen Four Championship and help lead Wisconsin to victory.
Hensler Out Long-Term for WisconSens
Logan Hensler suffered a nasty leg injury while going in for a check along the blue line on February 7th against Minnesota State University. At this point, it appears the injury could be season-ending.
This is unfortunate, as there were hopes that Hensler would continue developing the offensive side of his game. With six regular-season games remaining and the NCAA playoffs approaching, this is a significant loss for both Hensler and the Wisconsin program. While he has not officially been ruled out for the remainder of the season, the outlook is not promising. Hopefully, he can make a speedy recovery.
Lucas Beckman Stops 32 for a Win and Earns Second Star
Lucas Beckman made several remarkable saves to lead Chicoutimi to a win over the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. Beckman stood on his head in the third period, stopping all 22 shots he faced. Highlights from the game show him making three consecutive saves while holding down the fort and keeping his team firmly in control.
His performance earned him second star honors, though he was arguably robbed of the first star after his brick-wall effort in the final frame.
Beckman continues to split starts with Raphael Precourt, and it will be exciting to watch him down the stretch as he rises to the occasion for a CHL contender pushing toward a Memorial Cup Championship.
Game highlights of Beckman’s 32-save performance below.
It’s been a while since we’ve looked at the B-Sens – they’ve gone 5-3-2 in the last 10 games, and currently sit in 6th place in the North Division with a 20-21-8 record. This comes in spite of being tied for 2nd in the entire AHL with 159 goals for. Their prevention of opposing goals take a page out of Ottawa’s playbook – 178 goals allowed is the worst mark in the league.
At the very least, Leevi Merilainen is giving them some decent goaltending, having settled in with a 5-3-1 record and .908 save percentage. Mads Sogaard hasn’t been as good, with a 4-8-4 record and .889, but his most recent appearance with the club saw him 25 of 27 shots against the Providence Bruins last month. The Baby Bruins are the best defensive team in the AHL, however, which allowed them to beat Belleville 2-1 in OT.
The B-Sens’ last victory came on February 4th against the Rochester Americans by a 3-1 score, with 2022 5th-round pick Jorian Donovan nabbing a pair of assists. Donovan struggled through the holiday season with a 10-game pointless drought, but has rebounded with 6 points in 10 games since then, and has 20 points in 49 games this season, more than double last year’s pace.
2024 7th-overall pick Carter Yakemchuk is on a bit of a heater since returning from a month-long injury – 4 goals and an assist in his last 5 games has him up to 24 points in 36 games in a D+2 season. This ranks 2nd among AHL rookie defensemen, which is a good sign of his progression towards his first NHL game – though I don’t think it happens this year as long as Ottawa remains in the playoff race, as there’s still a lot of work to do defensively.
