Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey has been hurt in the Olympics.

One of the biggest risks for NHL players who accepted invitations to represent their respective nations in the 2026 Winter Olympics was the possibility that an injury could impact their season with their NHL team.

Perhaps the most noteworthy recent example took place during the 2014 Sochi Olympics, when Team Canada forward John Tavares, who was then a member of the New York Islanders, suffered tears to the MCL and meniscus in his left knee during Canada’s quarterfinal game against Latvia; he missed the remainder of the NHL season.

Now, the Winnipeg Jets have to hope that their best defenseman won’t have suffered a similar fate.

Defenseman Josh Morrissey was injured during the second period of Canada’s Group A opening game against Czechia at the Santagiulia Arena on Thursday, and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

The updates on Morrissey’s condition following the game, which was a 5-0 win for Canada, didn’t offer much encouragement.

“The locker room is a long way away so we have no chance to see him,” Canada head coach Jon Cooper said. “I haven’t been back.”

“I didn’t see what happened, but I hope he’s all right, obviously,” team captain Sidney Crosby said. “That’s difficult. We all want to be out there on the ice. Just hoping he’s all right.”
