Veteran defenseman and NHL analyst Chris Pronger expressed a strong opinion on the Detroit Red Wings’ own Moritz Seider.
Since the Detroit Red Wings haven’t had a Norris Trophy candidate on their roster since the 2010s in Nicklas Lidstrom, things have changed.
This season, he’s played a solid two-way game, offering not only offensive upside but also the ability to close the gaps and deprive his opponents of space with hits.
He leads all Red Wings defensemen in both ice time and points and has a plus-13 rating.
It appears that this season, Cale Makar is the shoo-in for the Norris Trophy, but Seider isn’t making it easier on Makar to earn it.
Veteran defenseman Chris Pronger weighed in on Moritz Seider’s season during a recent episode of Spittin’ Chiclets.
“We mentioned a month ago, the season he’s having,” Whitney said of Seider. “And I said, ‘I don’t know if there’s been a defenseman as close to Chris Pronger the way Moritz Seider is playing right now….he’s mean, he’s enormous.”
“Are you seeing some characteristics that you had in your game out of him?” Whitney asked.
Bissonnette followed up: “And is he a No. 1 at this point?”
“At this point, yes,” Pronger responded without hesitation before delving deeper into the characteristics that he feels a top NHL defenseman should have.
The Detroit Red Wings’ Moritz Seider is a top-pairing wonder for the Original Six team this year
It’s obvious that Pronger has found similarities between himself and Seider, as he believes that the German-born Red Wings star is a #1 defenseman in the league.
This season, Seider has played 58 games and scored 38 points (7-31) and has been a key piece in the Red Wings’ Cinderella season.
