Are Penguins Going Back to Blue 3rd Jerseys?

When nameless and faceless internet leaks have spectacular trade proposals and insider knowledge, it’s easy to file them under T for trash. However, over the last several seasons, keeping secrets on new alternate jerseys, or sweaters as they call them in Canada, has proven difficult.

A new Reddit poster claims to work for a U.S. jersey manufacturer and revealed that next season, the NHL will unveil “Hometown Remix” jerseys. The commentator has more compelling proof, as a report from SportsLogos.net shows that Fanatics, the league’s jersey supplier, has filed a US patent for the “Hometown Remix” mark.

Each team has selected a color for its new sweaters, and according to the Redditor, the Penguins will go back to blue.

Or, navy blue. The navy color designation might be less powder blue and more like the 1972-73 team picture from NHL.com:

The team wore the powder puff or some form of blue sweaters from their 1967 inception until a major mid-season rebrand on Jan. 30, 1980.

The team also brought back the blue from 2007-08 through 2010-11, and for the famous inaugural Winter Classic on Jan. 1, 2008, in Buffalo.

Or, the team could kill two birds with one stone (sorry, bad pun), and also include the dreaded Robopigeon for which many have clamored.

The “HTR” jerseys are still an unsubstantiated internet report, and even the Redditor cautioned to take it with a grain of salt, but the NHL does love their unique jersey reveals and keeping fans headed back to the pro shop.

This season’s Penguins yellow sweaters with the three rings to symbolize the town’s sister bridges and yellow lids have been a big success, but the reintroduction of the blue jerseys in 2007 did precede two Prince of Wales Trophies and a Stanley Cup.
