It was bound to happen for Canada eventually.
Canada kicked off their quest for gold in men’s ice hockey with an emphatic 5-0 win over Czechia in the opening game.
That gave Canada an unofficial shutout streak of 224 minutes and 19 seconds, dating back to the last time NHLers played at the Olympics.
Heading into the game against Switzerland, Canada hadn’t surrendered a goal during Olympic action with NHL players since the quarter-finals against Latvia in 2014.
Lauris Darzins was the last player to score against a Canadian goalie during the Olympics with NHLers, back when he scored in the first period against Canada’s Carey Price.
Since that goal, Price authored two shutouts to help Canada win gold in 2014, before Binnington’s shutout on Thursday.
Calgary native Logan Thompson was tasked with carrying on the streak until an ex-Vancouver Canucks centre ended it all.
Pius Suter buried a power play goal 12:42 into the first period against Canada on Friday, ending the shutout streak at 236:59.
Ironically, Suter scored the man-advantage marker after drawing a high-sticking penalty against former Canucks captain Bo Horvat. The two were never teammates in Vancouver.
Former #Canucks centre Pius Suter breaks a nearly four-hour shutout streak for Canada with NHLers at the Olympics

The nearly four-hour shutout streak won’t stand as an official record. The actual record was set at the 1948 Olympics, when Canada didn’t allow a goal for 225:05.
Suter was tied for the team lead on the Canucks last season with 25 goals. Although they had a glaring need for centres in the offseason, the Canucks let Pius Suter walk in free agency, where he signed a two-year deal with the St. Louis Blues worth $4 million per season.
So far this NHL season, Suter has seven goals and 15 points in 40 games.
