San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini is having a blast so far at the Winter Olympic Games in Milan Cortina.
It’d be impossible for him not to.
Playing alongside the NHL’s two leading scorers, Celebrini had a goal and an assist Friday as Canada powered its way to a 5-1 win over Switzerland and Sharks forward Philipp Kurashev at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena.
Celebrini scored off an assist from Nathan MacKinnon at the 4:14 mark of the second period for his second goal in as many games to give Canada a 3-1 lead.
The 19-year-old wunderkind then created a turnover deep in the Swiss zone in the third period and got the puck to Connor McDavid, whose shot on net was stopped by goalie Akira Schmid before MacKinnon scored on the rebound as the Canadians built a three-goal lead.
Team Canada coach Jon Cooper placed MacKinnon on the top line with Celebrini and McDavid at the end of the first period, as Switzerland was starting to gain momentum after Pius Suter’s power play goal with 7:18 left in the opening frame.
The result was magical, as Celebrini, MacKinnon, and McDavid combined for five points in the final two periods as Canada (2-0-0-0) moved into sole possession of first place in Group A.
At the Olympic break, McDavid, the Edmonton Oilers captain, led the NHL with 96 points, followed by the Colorado Avalanche’s MacKinnon with 93. Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning has 91 points, and Celebrini is by far and away the Sharks’ leading scorer with 81 points.
The Canadians can clinch first place in the group and a spot in the quarterfinals with a win over France on Sunday. The top four teams in the 12-team tournament earn spots in the quarterfinals and do not have to play in the qualification playoffs, which feature teams that finished fifth through 12th after group play.
Celebrini also scored in Canada’s tournament-opening 5-0 win over Czechia on Thursday.
On Thursday, the Canadians led 2-0 at the 10:54 mark of the first period on goals by McDavid and Thomas Harley. But Switzerland responded with a power play goal by Suter, who tapped a loose puck past goalie Logan Thompson at the 12:42 mark to cut Canada’s lead to 2-1.
The goal sparked a loud celebration inside the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, as thousands of Swiss fans who made the short trip across the Italian border made their presence felt.
Kurashev expected several of his friends and family members to be in Milan.
“It’s a dream come true for me and also for my family as well,” Kurashev said earlier this month. “Just excited to kind of get to experience it all. I don’t know really what to expect, so I’m just going to go there and take it day by day, and hopefully we can have a great tournament and have a lot of great moments.”
REGENDA, SLOVAKIA STAY PERFECT
Sharks winger Pavol Regenda assisted on Adam Ruzicka’s third-period goal as Slovakia moved into first place in Group B with a 3-2 win over Italy at Rho Arena in Milan on Friday.
On a Slovakian power play, Ruzicka fired a shot on goal that Italian goalie Damian Clara stopped. Regenda gathered the loose puck and backhanded a pass back toward the slot, where Ruzicka grabbed and fired it into a mostly empty net for a 3-1 Slovakian lead at the 11:54 mark of the third period.
Regenda had two shots on net for Slovakia, which will conclude the preliminary round against Sweden at Santagiulia Arena on Saturday at 3:10 a.m. PT.
WENNBERG, SWEDEN LOSE TO FINLAND
Sharks center Alex Wennberg won seven of 13 faceoffs and had one shot on goal for Sweden in its 4-1 loss to rival Finland on Friday.
Finland jumped out to a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Nikolas Matinpalo and Anton Lundell. Rasmus Dahlin got one goal back for Sweden, scoring on the power play at the 4:39 mark of the second period.
But Joel Armia and Mikko Rantanen responded with goals for Finland, with Rantanen’s goal, an empty netter with 35 seconds left in the third period, coming off an assist from ex-Sharks center Mikael Granlund.
