A proposed trade has emerged that would send a Vancouver Canucks forward & 2026 Winter Olympian to an Original Six franchise before the deadline in early March.

The Vancouver Canucks and the rest of the National Hockey League will have less than two weeks to get trades completed once the Olympic roster freeze comes to an end on Sunday, February 22nd at 8:59 pm PT (11:59 pm ET), which could lead to a flurry of deals in the final week of the month.

Vancouver Canucks forward & Winter Olympian dealt to Original Six franchise in new trade proposal

“I was fortunate to see him play in Berlin in his draft year [and I] appreciated his competitiveness, his skill set, and his ability to skate. Over time, you’ve been waiting to see if this guy would be able to take it to the next level and establish himself as an NHL player. It’s been like for most of the young players, a little bit of an up and down, until you establish yourselves. But you can see the skill set; you can see the speed in his game,” Allvin said after trading for Lukas Reichel.

Reichel’s time in Vancouver didn’t go as everyone was hoping, with just one assist in 14 games, leading Allvin to place the German forward on waivers in order to be assigned to the American Hockey League.

In an article for Heavy.com, Nestor Quixtan proposed a deal that would see the Vancouver Canucks trade Lukas Reichel to the New York Rangers in exchange for forward Brennan Othmann, who is in need of a fresh start with a new organization.

“The fact is that the Canucks lose nothing by giving Othmann a shot. He is an impending RFA with a reasonable cap hit. The upside, however, could be significant enough to entice Vancouver to give him a solid crack at the NHL. Vancouver’s rebuild could be a good opportunity for Othmann to prove himself without the pressure of playing on Broadway.” Quixtan said.

Othmann, a first rounder in 2021, has one goal in 16 games with the Rangers this season, along with 14 points in 23 games with their minor league affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Given that the Vancouver Canucks are looking to get younger, Othmann might be a good pick up for Patrik Allvin & Co. to play get NHL minutes, probably in a bottom-six role for now, especially if it comes at a relatively low cost, parting with Lukas Reichel or even a mid-round pick.
