Former Toronto Maple Leafs forward Denis Malgin left the game vs. Team Canada on Friday and it could be serious enough to put his Olympic status in jeopardy.
It was a rough outing for Team Switzerland against Team Canada on Friday afternoon, as not only were they outmatched by a very dominant Canadian squad, but also had to contend with a flurry on injuries.
Former Leaf Malgin also exits game vs. Canada
But he wasn’t the only player leaving with some bumps and bruises as two more Swiss players were taken out of the game including a former Toronto Maple Leafs forward:
Dennis Malgin, the player Toronto traded Mason Marchment for a few years ago, seemed to have suffered an upper-body injury and had to leave the game with his status unknown for the rest of the tournament.
The other name who left the contest was Andrea Glauser who ended up getting rocked by a Connor McDavid body-check and needed to be taken off the ice.
Suffice to say for head coach Patrick Fischer, he’s going to have a lot to handle and with the rules stating that teams cannot make any replacements after playing a game already — his hands are pretty much tied.
Team Switzerland put in precarious position heading into final preliminary matchup
The biggest loss though is undoubtedly Fiala, who was having a stellar season with the Los Angeles Kings and was looked at as a key point in the Swiss offense and part of a group who had legitimate gold medal aspirations.
For now, all the Swiss team can do is hold their breath that at the very least, the two players they lost in addition to Fiala in Malgin and Glauser aren’t too seriously injured and their Olympics aren’t in jeopardy.
Malgin hasn’t played in the NHL since the 2022-23 season, and he spent 23 games in Toronto while registering four points.
Switzerland’s final preliminary round game will take place on Sunday against Czechia.
