Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman will make his first career Olympic start when the Americans take on Denmark in a preliminary round game at 3:10 p.m. ET
Team USA is only making one change to its lineup Saturday.
Winnipeg Jets’ Connor Hellebuyck, who started USA’s 5-1 win over Latvia on Thursday, will be Swayman’s backup.
In 38 games for Boston this season, Swayman is 22-12-3 with a 2.92 GAA and .903 save percentage.
Swayman was on the Team USA roster last year at the NHL 4 National Face-Off, but didn’t see action in the middle of a difficult season for him.
When the Bruins didn’t make the playoffs, he joined Team USA for the World Championships and helped lead the Americans to a gold medal. His participation and his play help him rebuild his game and cement his status within USA Hockey.
Team USA plays its first of a back-to-back Saturday against Denmark before wrapping up the preliminary round against Germany on Sunday.
It’s unclear who will start Sunday. USA also has Dallas Stars’ Jake Oetteinger on its roster.
Coach Mike Sullivan has kept his cards close to the vest on his goaltending decisions for this tournament. Its unclear if each goalie is auditioning for playing time in the medal round of if he’s just trying to avoid overworking Hellebuyck in a tight schedule.
