Charlie Cummings breaks down his prediction and pick for the Czechia vs. Switzerland men’s hockey matchup at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

We’re at the business end of the preliminary stage in the Olympic Men’s Hockey tournament. Czechia and Switzerland are tied in the standings and need a win to get in the conversation for a bye into the quarterfinals.

Team Czechia is a -142 moneyline favorite to win this one, and the puck line is set at 1.5 goals on DraftKings Sportsbook. If you think the Swiss can pull an upset, they’re priced at +120. The total is set at 4.5 goals.

Let’s dig into a preview and pick for this Group A matchup.

Czechia vs. Switzerland prediction, preview

After suffering a 5-0 shellacking at the hands of the Canadian team, the Czech team got back on track by beating France, 6-3. Their two biggest offensive stars, David Pastrnak and Martin Necas, played a big role in reviving the offense. The issue so far has been the defense; their blue line group was made with defense in mind, but they have not done a great job in front of netminder Dan Vladar. They’ll have to be better to beat the Swiss.

It’s more or less the same story for Switzerland in its first two games. They did well against the French, pulling out a 4-0 win before taking a beating from the Canadians. Defense and goaltending were expected to be the issues, but it didn’t stop them against the French. Their forward group has performed well, led by a two-goal showing from Timo Meier. He and fellow New Jersey Devils teammate Nico Hischier are the crux of the team’s attack.

Both teams have shown flaws. There’s no shame in losing to the Canadians at ice hockey (just ask the rest of the world), but they’ll have to put up more of a fight in the elimination rounds to have a puncher’s chance at a medal. But, first things first, we have a big battle in the standings.

With both teams tied at 1-0-1, the winner will be the only one with a chance at a bye into the next round. Only four teams get a bye, and five teams already have two wins. But if the winner does well on goal differential, they could sneak into one of those byes. So the incentive is there to win — and to win big.

Who will get that shot at the bye week?

Czechia vs. Switzerland pick, best bet

Both teams are capable of more than they’ve shown. But you have to look at the common denominators: the Swiss defense appeared to adapt better to the French. However, France had only 12 shots in that game, compared to a 27-shot shutout against Switzerland. Czech goalie Dan Vladar has better performances in him, and his defense did a great job at limiting the volume of chances.

I think Czechia has the better team, and that will show in this game. They should take a stab at being one of the bye week teams with a convincing win.

Best Bet: Czechia -1.5 (+205)
