The final day of group play was an easygoing one for the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday.
Team Canada steamrolled France in a 10-2 win and clinched the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinal round. Canada won the goal differential tiebreaker over Team USA, who also finished 3-0 in the group stage with a 5-1 win over Germany.
Canada had a plus-17 goal differential, while the United States was plus-11.
Knights captain Mark Stone had a short-handed goal and added two assists, and winger Mitch Marner had two assists and defenseman Shea Theodore one to help Canada easily power through Group A.
“When you go into these tournaments, you expect everyone’s best coming in, coming out of the gates in the first period,” Stone said. “But we feel like if we’re playing 60 minutes, rolling over four lines, we’re going to start wearing teams down. I think that’s what ended up happening.”
Defenseman Noah Hanifin had an assist, and center Jack Eichel was a plus-1 with two shots. Team USA scored five unanswered goals before German winger Tim Stutzle ended Connor Hellebuyck’s shutout bid midway through the third period.
The quarterfinals will begin Wednesday and could feature multiple games with several Knights players facing each other.
Canada’s quest for a third gold medal since 2010 continues in the quarterfinal round. The Canadians will face the winner of Czechia — with Knights center Tomas Hertl — and Denmark.
Team USA, looking for its first gold medal since the Miracle on Ice team from 1980, will take on the winner of Sweden — and Knights defenseman Rasmus Andersson — and Latvia.
Knights goaltender Akira Schmid and Switzerland will face Italy in the qualification round. The winner will take on Finland, the top second-place team of the group stage.
All signs point to the U.S. and Canada meeting for the gold Feb. 22 should both sides continue this run of domination.
On the women’s side, Team USA and Canada are each one win from meeting for the gold for the seventh time in eight Olympics since women’s hockey was added in 1998.
