Matthew Tkachuk knows what it’s like to get the better of Leon Draisaitl.
The Florida Panthers star is playing for Team USA at the Olympics, and the Oilers’ superstar Draisaitl represents Germany.
On Monday, the United States routed the Germans, 5-1.
During the game, NBC’s microphones picked up a savage line from Tkachuk to Draisaitl:
“Always the bridesmaid, eh, Leon? Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.”
Incredible. Tkachuk certainly doesn’t lack for confidence.
The Panthers beat the Oilers in seven games in the 2024 Stanley Cup Finals, then repeated against Edmonton in 2025 in six games.
“Some guys you got to play harder than most, physically and maybe after the whistle sometimes, too,” Tkachuk told reporters after the game. “So sometimes you’ve got to play both parts of the game.”

Draisaitl didn’t even have a shot on goal during Monday’s game despite being the most important offensive player for Germany, so that’d go down as a strong defensive performance for the United States. Team USA certainly knew who it needed to be focused on in this matchup.
Tkachuk has five points for the Olympics through three games. His brother Brady has added three points.
With the Tkachuk brothers and Hughes brothers both on Team USA’s roster, they’ve got quite the fraternity going.
And when it comes to Matthew Tkachuk specifically, he also feels good about how his teams usually play against Draisaitl.
