With the state tournament on the horizon, Methuen/Tewksbury continues its hold on the top spot in the Globe’s Top 20 girls’ hockey poll.
The Red Rangers, hosting the Brianna McCarthy/Dave O’Hearn Memorial Tournament final Wednesday, are still unbeaten at 17-0-2. The only other unbeaten team, Algonquin, dealt No. 2 Notre Dame (Hingham) its second loss of the year Saturday.
St. Mary’s is up to No. 8 after claiming the Catholic Central title with an overtime win over No. 9 Archbishop Williams Monday. Reading, which captured the Middlesex League title, moves up to No. 12.
New entrants this week are No. 18 Arlington Catholic and No. 20 Medfield. The Cougars have played one of the toughest schedules in the state and are unbeaten outside of CCL competition. Medfield, last year’s Division 2 state champion, have turned up the pace in the final few weeks of the season, with wins in five of their last six.
