Los Angeles Kings forward Kevin Fiala suffered a serious leg injury that could keep him out of the remainder of the 2025-26 season. The injury came during the 2026 Olympics yet the timetable for his return is unknown.

Fiala was a member of Team Switzerland when the injury occurred. He was hit into the side boards by Canadian forward Tom Wilson, formally of the Washington Capitals, and did not move after the contact. He remained on his stomach until the medical team assisted him and eventually placed him on a stretcher. He was removed from the ice and did not return. Team Switzerland lost the game 5-1 but the loss of Fiala was bigger.

Wilson’s leg got intertwined with Fiala’s and Fiala’s leg bent in an awkward way when Wilson fell. It was not until after the game was decided that news hit that Fiala would have surgery the next morning. He had successful surgery to repair lower leg fractures and is on his way to recovery. An unfortunate incident that cost him the rest of the Olympics.

While Fiala is out for the remainder of the 2026 Olympics his NHL return remains in question. Shortly after the injury it was reported he would be out of the rest of the 2025-26 NHL regular season. However, after the surgery was completed, there were reports that Fiala may be able to come back to the Kings if he made a full recovery and the Kings made a deep run. Fiala has been a big contributor to Los Angeles and losing him is indeed a big blow to the roster.

The Kings currently sit three points out of a wild-card spot in the Western Conference with a 23-19-14 record. Fiala is second to Adrian Kempe in the Kings’ scoring with 40 points in 56 games.

While the news on Fiala is unfortunate the Kings did recently acquire forward Artemi Panarin from the New York Rangers and the trade deadline is right around the corner. Panarin was a big addition to the KIngs lineup and looks like he will replace Fiala on the roster. He will provide the offense left by Fialaand also be a bonus on the power play. The timing of the Panarin deal could not have come at a better time although none of us saw the injury coming. We all wish Fiala a speedy recovery as he takes time to heal from this nasty injury. We prefer him back at full strength instead of rushing him back.
