Team Canada is shuffling its lineup again.

It’s one Florida Panthers star in for another: Brad Marchand is back to play after two scratches in a row. But that leaves Sam Bennett on the outside looking in.

Bennett is one of two skater scratches for the Canadians’ Olympic quarterfinal matchup with Czechia on Wednesday. He’s joined on that list by defenseman Josh Morrissey, who hasn’t played since leaving the opening game with an undisclosed injury.

The Panthers gritty forward Bennett has played in all three games, though. This will be his first absence.

Given the uproar when Bennett initially missed the Olympic team altogether, this may not go over well.

Why isn’t Sam Bennett playing today?

Sam Bennett isn’t playing in Wednesday’s quarterfinal because he was scratched by Canada head coach Jon Cooper.

He was out on the ice skating in the morning, so Bennett doesn’t appear injured. This seems to be a healthy scratch.

It’s a bit of a surprise, given Bennett’s winning experience with the back-to-back Stanley Cup champions.

But given that Bennett only made the team as an injury replacement in the first place, it’s clear Cooper doesn’t value him immensely.

To bring Marchand back in, someone had to sit. It had been Seth Jarvis in game one, but he stays dressed. So too does Nick Suzuki, who some fans hoped would be the guy scratched instead.

Bennett is the one who gets the bad news, though, and he will hope Canada advances so he can get another chance in these Olympics.
