One of the largest trade rumors around the NHL, which took up a lot of discussions over the summer, was the future of star Jason Robertson with the Dallas Stars. Dallas was rumored to be looking into trading away Robertson, mainly due to salary cap problems.

Robertson is scheduled to be a restricted free agent this coming summer, and then an unrestricted one in 2027. But it seems that the Stars may not want to pay Robertson a large amount on his next deal, and it’s not that his production hasn’t earned it.

Dallas already has multiple players locked up on long-term deals, and this could force their hand when it comes to Robertson. Between Miro Heiskanen, Roope Hintz, Mikko Rantanen, Thomas Harley, Wyatt Johnston, and Jake Oettinger, the Stars are on the hook for over $56 million annually until 2029.

With this, it could cause the Stars to make a decision on Robertson, which would smartly be to trade him before he walks in free agency. Due to his impact on the ice, Dallas could likely net a strong return, and it may help set them up well down the line.

This season, Robertson has continued his strong play, scoring 32 goals and putting up 34 assists in 57 games played. Last season, Robertson posted 35 goals and had 45 assists, playing in all 82 games.

His consistency has been excellent, and Robertson remains one of the better goal-scorers in the NHL. Trading him isn’t what the Stars want to do, but it may not be possible to avoid.

Jason Robertson to Pittsburgh?

Last month, NHL insider Josh Yohe of The Athletic mentioned that the Pittsburgh Penguins have interest in Robertson if he is moved. This nugget from Yohe could come back into play as the NHL trade freeze will be ending fairly soon.

“The Penguins absolutely love Jason Robertson. They aren’t alone, of course. The 26-year-old Dallas Stars forward has 56 points in 49 games. He’ll be in extreme demand if the Stars make him available,” Yohe wrote.

Jason Robertson Could Transform Pittsburgh Penguins

If the Penguins were to make a trade for Robertson, it could completely transform this team. Adding one of the better scorers in the NHL could help set Pittsburgh up for years to come, all while giving the team a big boost this season as well.

Pittsburgh entered the year unsure of what the season would hold, but this team has exceeded expectations. Currently, the Penguins sit second in the Metropolitan Division, and they are looking like a potential Stanley Cup contender.

If this team could add Robertson to the mix, it may have them thinking about another title. His ability to both score the puck while also being a playmaker is electric, and Pittsburgh’s offense could take off.

With the Penguins having multiple older guys on the team, such as Sidney Crosby, Robertson could be the next franchise player of this organization. Dallas could get a nice return from Pittsburgh as well, with the Penguins potentially even sending a veteran to help the Stars keep contending this season.

It will cost the Penguins a lot to make a trade for Robertson, but he seems more than worth it. This move would be about both the future and the present, which not all teams can do within trades.
