How to Watch

Watch the 2026 Winter Olympics on NBC and Peacock.

On February 18, Team USA men’s hockey advanced to the semifinals in the Winter Olympics tournament thanks to a game-winning goal in overtime vs. Sweden. The scorer? Quinn Hughes, a 26-year-old star for the Minnesota Wild who, like many other men’s hockey players, is skating in his first Olympics

Hughes’ goal not only defeated Sweden, but guaranteed the US men’s team a shot at playing for a medal. They now advance to the semifinals for a game against Slovakia. Win, and they play in the gold medal game; lose, and they play in the bronze medal game. Needless to say the shot was a big moment for Hughes, but it was also a big moment for his family, because he’s not the only Hughes going for gold in these games.

Who are Quinn and Jack Hughes?

Quinn Hughes made headlines for his game-winning overtime goal, but he’s not the only member of the family chasing his Olympic dreams right now. Quinn’s younger brother, Jack Hughes, is also a member of the US men’s national team. The brothers play different positions on different lines for Team USA, so they don’t often get to share the rink together, but they’re part of the same roster, and they’re moving toward the same goal.

As the older brother, Quinn made his pro hockey dreams come true first, entering the 2018 NHL Draft, where he was selected 7th overall by the Vancouver Canucks. Late last year, he was traded to the Minnesota Wild. Jack followed his older brother into the league in 2019, when he was the number one overall pick for the New Jersey Devils, where he still plays. Together, the brothers made the US Olympic team, which is fielding NHL players for the first time in more than a decade.

Are Quinn and Jack Hughes related to other hockey players?

The Hughes brothers are a family affair for the Team USA men, but the Hughes hockey dynasty actually extends even further than Quinn and Jack. Their mother, Ellen Weinberg-Hughes, played hockey at the University of New Hampshire, where she was a three-sport athlete, then competed on the international circuit for the US women’s national team. She never made the Olympics as a player, but her work as a broadcaster and coach eventually led her to work in player development for the US women’s team. She’s now part of the coaching staff for Team USA in Milan Cortina, working with the women as they chase gold.

But that’s not all. Quinn and Jack’s father, Jim Hughes, was also a collegiate hockey star who later transitioned into coaching and now works in the hockey division of talent agency CAA, serving as a mentor and guiding force for many stars in the NHL and beyond. Quinn and Jack’s youngest brother, Luke Hughes, joined the New Jersey Devils in 2021, where he plays alongside Jack.

“We have the Olympic spirit,” Jim Hughes told NHL.com. “It’s been a really enjoyable experience.”

Are Quinn and Jack the only brothers representing Team USA Hockey?

No! Believe it or not, Quinn and Jack Hughes are one of two sets of brothers skating for Team USA hockey. Matthew and Brady Tcachuk, of the Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators, respectively, are also key members of the men’s team.
