The matchup most hockey fans wanted to see when NHL players returned to the Winter Olympics has materialized.

Team USA and Canada will face off for the gold medal in Milan, marking the third time the rivalry game has determined the Olympic champion in “best-on-best” competition. Canada prevailed in both previous games, winning gold in 2010 and 2002.
Each team brings a star-studded roster to the table, even with Canada captain Sidney Crosby’s status in doubt due to an injury suffered earlier in the Games. The Canadians reached the finals with a pair of thrilling comeback wins, first in overtime against Czechia in the quarterfinals and rallying from behind again to beat Finland in the semis.
Team USA also needed overtime to get through the quarters, edging out Sweden 2-1 on Quinn Hughes’ game-winner, before breezing past Slovakia 6-2 to reach the final.
The U.S. has only won men’s hockey gold twice, both times on home ice: 1980 in Lake Placid and 1960 in Squaw Valley. Can Auston Matthews and Co. break that trend and end the drought in Italy?
