Former Seattle Totems captain Guyle Fielder, who inspired one of the Kraken’s annual team awards, died Saturday at the age of 95.
Fielder was born on Nov. 21, 1930, in Potlatch, Idaho, and raised in Saskatchewan. He was best known for his highly productive 22-season career in the Western Hockey League.
Fielder was the league MVP six times and the leading scorer nine times. He helped the Totems to three WHL minor pro championships in 1959, 1967 and 1968 before retiring in 1973.
After the franchise launched in 2021, the Kraken created the Guyle Fielder Award, which recognizes the player who best exemplifies Fielder’s “perseverance, hustle and dedication.” Center Yanni Gourde won the first season and winger Jaden Schwartz has won each of the past three seasons.
The Seattle Sports Commission honored Fielder with the “Royal Brougham Sports Legend Award” at its Sports Star of the Year awards in 2024.
