As we learn that Samuel Montembeault must leave the team for personal reasons, a familiar name has just appeared on the NHL radar.

We can agree that the timing is quite unusual for Kent Hughes.

Quebec goaltender Olivier Rodrigue has just signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Chicago Blackhawks.

It’s significant news, as the Chicoutimi native was returning from Europe.

After seeing his contract terminated in the KHL with Barys Astana this fall without even playing a game, Rodrigue reached an agreement with Chicago this Saturday.

An intriguing goaltender option for Kent Hughes

The Hawks’ strategy is clear: they are placing him on waivers to assign him to Rockford.

We know that Montembeault is not having a strong season.

Rodrigue is 25 years old and got a taste of the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers last year. We’re talking about a former second-round pick who played 41 games in the American Hockey League last season.

His career 3.10 average in the NHL does not make him a savior, but his .916 save percentage in the AHL the year before proves he has talent.

The Canadiens have waiver priority over several teams. Will Kent Hughes dare to claim the Quebecer to fill a hole, or will he let this free opportunity pass by?
