POTSDAM — Potsdam Central High School won its first New York state girls hockey championship in more than a decade Saturday, defeating Adirondack United 3-2 at the Utica University Nexus Center.

Myla Thomas scored 13 seconds into the game to give the Lady Sandstoners an early lead. Adirondack United tied it 1-1 on a power-play goal late in the first period.

Potsdam opened the second period with another quick strike. Allyson Draper scored 42 seconds in to make it 2-1, but Adirondack United answered minutes later to even the game at 2-2.

With both teams generating limited shots, Potsdam capitalized on one of its chances late in the second. Averie Bicknell scored off a pass from Sophie Merriman with 1:40 remaining to give the Sandstoners a 3-2 lead entering the third period.

The final period was scoreless despite power-play opportunities for both teams. Potsdam controlled the puck and ran time off the clock late to secure the victory.

“The kids have been resilient to whatever the situation is, and we just keep competing and win a lot of close games,” coach Joe Stark said before the championship game. “We won a ton of close games. We won a lot of games by one goal.”

Potsdam previously won state titles in 2008-09 and 2011-12 and was named regional co-champion in 2013-14. The Sandstoners entered the championship game with a 17-3-2 record and were unbeaten against Section X opponents.

Potsdam edged Canton Central 3-2 in the opening round of the Section X playoffs and defeated Massena 4-0 to advance to the state tournament. The Sandstoners then beat Beekmantown 2-1 in overtime to reach the state Final Four for the first time in two decades.

Potsdam defeated CASH (Clarence/Amherst/Sweet Home), a Buffalo-area team made up of players from multiple schools, 2-0 in Friday’s semifinal in Utica to advance to the title game.

Stark returned this season after Abbie Adams stepped away on maternity leave. Assistant coaches are Lindsay LaSala and Olivia Scott.
