Monument to a Miracle congratulated the U.S. men’s and women’s Olympic hockey teams on capturing gold medals at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan/Cortina, adding to the legacy of American hockey and adding new meaning to one of the sport’s most historic dates: Feb. 22.
On Feb. 22 in 1980, the U.S. men’s Olympic team delivered the famous “Miracle on Ice” in Lake Placid, defeating the heavily favored Soviet Union. Four and a half decades later, the spirit of that victory carried forward as the U.S. women’s team won gold in PyeongChang in 2018.
Now, in 2026, the U.S. women’s team added a third Olympic gold medal to their remarkable legacy while the U.S. men’s team delivered a decisive overtime victory against Canada in the gold medal final, the first time the men’s team has won gold since the 1980 Olympics Miracle.
“Together, these victories showcase the strength of American hockey, past, present and future, and reaffirm the values first demonstrated by the 1980 team: belief, teamwork and courage under pressure,” read a statement by Monument to a Miracle.
The Monument to a Miracle project aims to create a life-size, bronze tribute statue in Lake Placid recognizing all 20 players of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, enshrining their legacy.
“These gold medals remind us that the Miracle was never just one moment in time. It was the beginning of a legacy that continues to inspire every generation that follows,” said Monument to a Miracle President Jeff Potter. “The achievements of the 2026 teams stand on the shoulders of the heroes of 1980, whose impact still resonates across the hockey world.”
