As the 2026 edition of the National Hockey League’s trade deadline approaches in just over a week, there’s a ton of chatter about a lot of players, many of them currently members of the Calgary Flames.
Yaremchuk inquired regarding teams calling the Flames about Weegar’s services and the likelihood that the Flames would move him:
Yeah, and more teams have started to inquire on him in the last seven to ten days, the second half of the Olympic break. And even beforehand, there were teams like Ottawa poking around. I throw Detroit in that mix as well. Detroit’s basically looking for a right-shot D. So if they can find that, if it’s not Myers, they’re going to look to bring somebody else in. But MacKenzie Weegar with his control, he’s got a $6.25 million cap hit. He also has a full no-trade clause. So far, they have not approached Weegar about the possibility of waiving it, but it is something that I expect to happen between now and March 6th, where they have that conversation to at least have an understanding as to where his head is at. I think if he does waive, and you’re right, there would be considerable amount of interest in this player. I’ve got to imagine teams like Dallas and Tampa and some of the other top contenders that want to really add an impact type of player would have interest in him as well, but if there’s not a top-tier Cup contender, I don’t think Mackenzie Weegar considers waiving right now, not at this stage of his career. And a big chunk of that has to do with the fact that he really likes it in Calgary. He’s comfortable there. He likes the guys in the room… Teams like Boston and Detroit, maybe there’s a little bit more of a willingness to go in that direction.
The Flames acquired Weegar from the Florida Panthers in July 2022 as part of the Matthew Tkachuk trade. And as much as Jonathan Huberdeau’s acquisition was touted as a coup by the Flames at the time, hockey people also were abuzz about Weegar’s potential as a big-time blueliner. The Flames signed him to an eight year extension with a $6.25 million cap hit before he had played a single game as a sign of their belief in Weegar.
Aside from this season, where he struggled prior to being paired with rookie Yan Kuznetsov, Weegar’s definitely lived up to that potential. He’s played a lot, played well, and featured in virtually every game situation for the Flames. He’s served as part of the club’s leadership group, spoken eloquently and at great length about his belief in Craig Conroy’s youth movement, and he’s also been a big part of setting the culture that the Flames are hoping to build upon. Weegar’s contract includes a full no-trade clause at present, so he has the hammer in terms of whether he goes anywhere or not.
In short: Weegar seems like someone that would want to stick around to see the Flames’ project through. We don’t think the Flames are in any hurry to shoo him out the door, nor is Weegar in any hurry to leave. That said, Weegar’s cost effectiveness, leadership and overall ability would make him pretty appealing to contenders, and there is probably a potential value level where the Flames would gauge Weegar’s willingness to move elsewhere if a team knocks their socks off with a hefty offer.
We don’t think Weegar is on the move in the near future, but stranger things have happened.
The Flames are in action on Thursday night in San Jose. The 2026 trade deadline is Fri., Mar. 6 at 1 p.m. MT.
