USA hockey claimed its first gold medal at the IIHF World Championship since 1933 with a 1-0 overtime victory over Switzerland.
Tage Thompson, a current forward for the Buffalo Sabres and former first-round pick by the St. Louis Blues in 2016, scored the only goal of the game in overtime. He fired a wrist shot past Swiss goalie Leonardo Genoni’s blocker to seal the win for Team USA. Logan Cooley and Brady Skjei picked up assists on the play.
Lightning defenseman J.J. Moser was a steady presence for Switzerland throughout the tournament, playing in all nine games. He finished with one goal, five assists, and a plus-8 rating, helping lead the team to another strong showing. Switzerland has won silver three times in 2013, 2018, and most recently in 2024 but has never won gold.

“We have a good consistency now over the past couple of years of the same guys coming in,” Moser said ahead of their championship matchup. “We have a chemistry in the team and also take our experiences from the past years, and that kind of gets us more confidence and more calmness in those situations.”
The score was the first ever 1-0 overtime game for the gold medal.
