The Detroit Red Wings (34-19-6) and the Carolina Hurricanes (37-15-6) meet Saturday at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Red Wings vs. Hurricanes and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: Tied 1-1

The Red Wings returned from the Olympic break with a 2-1 victory in overtime at Ottawa Thursday as moderate underdogs (+130) as the Under (6) cashed. Team USA gold medalist F Dylan Larkin scored a power-play goal in regulation, and he delivered the game-winning goal in the extra session.

Detroit has struggled to score in the past 6 games, totaling 9 goals in the span, or 1.5 goals per game (GPG). The Under has cashed in 4 in a row, while going 8-3-1 in the past 12 outings.

The Hurricanes outlasted the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-4 as moderate favorites (-155) on Thursday as the Over (6) cashed. The Canes built a 3-0 lead, but they blew it, and the game was tied 4-4. Canes C Sebastian Aho notched a power-play goal at 7:17 of the third period, and it stood up as the game-winning tally.

Carolina has picked up at least 1 point in 11 straight games, going 9-0-2. The Over has a 4-2 edge in the past 6 games. The Hurricanes have won 7 of the past 9 games since April 11, 2023, with the Over cashed in 4 consecutive outings.

John Gibson (23-12-2, 2.57 GAA, .906 SV%, 4 SO) vs. Brandon Bussi (24-3-1, 2.23 GAA, .906 SV%, 2 SO)

Gibson allowed just a single goal on 27 shots in the 2-1 OTW in Ottawa on Thursday, and he is 2-1-0 with a 1.34 GAA and .944 SV% with a shutout in 3 starts in February, all on the road. He allowed 4 goals on 37 shots in a 5-2 road loss in Raleigh on Dec. 27, while allowed just 3 goals on 34 shots in a 4-3 OTW in Detroit on Jan. 12.

Bussi allowed 4 goals on 28 shots in a 5-4 victory over the Lightning on Thursday, and he has now won 8 consecutive starts since Jan. 16. The rookie has allowed 3 or fewer goals in 10 of his past 12 starts, too. He has faced Detroit once this season, turning aside 18 of 20 shots for the 5-2 victory on Dec. 27 at Lenovo Center.

Red Wings at Hurricanes picks and predictionsPrediction

Hurricanes 3, Red Wings 2

The Hurricanes (-200) are a little on the pricey side. My personal limit for a singular moneyline play is -180, and I wouldn’t waste a boost or promo on Carolina. If anything, the better play is going with the Red Wings (+165) as moderate underdogs.

PASS.

The RED WINGS +1.5 (-145) are worth a look, as they’re not priced out of line if you’d like a little insurance. This battle between teams with postseason aspirations should be a close one, and it wouldn’t be surprising if it is decided in overtime or a shootout like the most recent meeting on Jan. 12 in Detroit.

Be careful, as Carolina has outscored Detroit 21-7 in the past 5 meetings in Raleigh. However, this Red Wings is much better than years past.

UNDER 6 (+100) is worth paying lightly at even-money.

The Red Wings have had a power outage on offense, going for just 9 total goals in the past 6 games, or 1.5 GPG. The Under is 4-0 in the past 4 games for Detroit, while going 8-3-1 across the past 12 outings.

The Hurricanes have split the Over-Under 2-2 in the past 4 outings, and Carolina has allowed 2.4 GPG in the past 11 contests.
