The waiver market suddenly heats up today with several experienced names available for the Montreal Canadiens.

In addition to Andrew Mangiapane and Robby Fabbri, Luke Kunin and Tyrel Bauer are also now free as the wind.

For Kent Hughes, these options represent an opportunity to add depth without giving up any assets in return.

The organization must evaluate whether the offensive impact of these veterans justifies occupying a spot under the salary cap.

Andrew Mangiapane brings consistent intensity and solid execution in the offensive zone. He could stabilize a group of forwards seeking more consistency in their controlled zone entries.

Robby Fabbri remains a player capable of energizing a quick transition game despite his past injuries.

His acquisition would allow the team to test new combinations to boost offensive production.

For his part, Luke Kunin offers a more physical profile for defensive assignments. His presence would ensure an effective transition for the Canadiens’ penalty-kill units.

The Montreal Canadiens organization must, however, manage its surplus of players.

Waivers today:

Mangiapane & Regula (EDM)
Brisebois (VAN)
Fabbri (STL)
Kunin (FLA)

An analysis of Montreal’s immediate needs

The Canadiens currently hold a 33-17-9 record.

Clean, efficient zone exits are a priority for the coaching staff.

Adding a veteran such as Mangiapane or Kunin would aim to solidify that aspect of the game.

The next 24 hours will determine whether management decides to submit a claim.

The final decision will depend on the Canadiens’ leadership’s vision for the playoffs.
