It was only a matter of time before veteran defenseman Tyler Myers was dealt from the Vancouver Canucks. He ended up with the contending Dallas Stars, with a team that could end up with a Stanley Cup Final berth if all goes right.
The price? We’ll discuss it below, but there’s an intriguing trend developing as the 2026 NHL trade deadline approaches: Teams are willing to give up second-round draft picks for less-than-big names (see: Connor Murphy to the Oilers, Michael McCarron to the Wild).
That should preview our trade grades for this one. Let’s hand them out for each team, plus the details of the deal:
Stars and Canucks trade details
Stars get: D Tyler Myers (and Canucks will pay 50 percent of his contract)
Canucks get: 2027 second-round pick and a fourth-round pick in 2029
Stars trade grade
You can never have too many solid defensemen, especially a veteran presence in the postseason. The Stars are deep on the blue line but could always get deeper and this is the kind of move you make if you’re a possible contender. AND on top of that, Myers will come cheap with Vancouver’s salary help.
Giving up a second-round pick and another selection in the future feels like a lot, though. So maybe that bumps this down a bit. GRADE: B
Canucks trade grade
I guess paying some of Myers’ salary got them that extra fourth-rounder, but to nab a second-round pick for a player who isn’t a huge name feels like a steal. GRADE: A-
