Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin has announced a roster move on Thursday morning involving a recently acquired defenseman they got from the San Jose Sharks.
The Vancouver Canucks’ roster is expected to look a lot different over the next 24 hours as the club is hoping to move on from several players before the deadline, including their pending unrestricted free agents – Teddy Blueger, David Kampf and Evander Kane.
“Given where things currently stand and the direction of our rebuild, we felt it was necessary to make a move like this as we continue to build our pipeline. In addition to adding two draft picks, Cole is a right-shot defenceman who will report to Abbotsford.” Allvin said after the Sherwood trade was finalized.
Vancouver Canucks announce roster move involving recently acquired defenseman Cole Clayton
One day after trading Tyler Myers to the Dallas Stars and placing blueliner Pierre-Olivier Joseph on injured reserve (IR), the Vancouver Canucks announced that they’ve called up Cole Clayton from the American Hockey League.
“General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that D Cole Clayton has been recalled from Abbotsford (AHL).” the Canucks said on X.
Clayton, a native of Strathmore, Alberta, went undrafted and in 2021, after four seasons in the Western Hockey League with Medicine Hat Tigers, signed an AHL deal to join the Columbus Blue Jackets organization.
After four seasons with the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters, Clayton decided to head west and signed a one-year, two-way deal with the San Jose Sharks as an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, 2025, spending his entire time with their minor league affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda, prior to his trade to the Vancouver Canucks.
In 16 games with the Abbotsford Canucks, Clayton has registered two assists, 15 penalty minutes and is a minus-five.
With the Vancouver expected to complete more moves prior to Friday’s deadline, Clayton could have an opportunity to make his National Hockey League debut as early as this weekend as the Canucks jet off on a quick two-game road trip that’ll take them to Chicago tomorrow and Winnipeg on Saturday.
Puck drop for Friday night’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks is set for 5:30 pm PT and can be viewed regionally in British Columbia on Sportsnet Pacific.
