This season, the Golden Knights have the third-most wins when outshooting their opponents. Strangely enough, over the past two months, they’re tied for second for the most losses when they outshoot their opponent as well. Their record is 24-13-8 when leading the shots on goal battle.

Most Regulation Wins When Outshooting Opponents

Carolina Hurricanes – 34 wins
Colorado Avalanche – 31 wins
Vegas Golden Knights – 24 wins
Ottawa Senators – 22 wins
Edmonton Oilers – 20 wins

VGK have outshot their opponents in 46 of their 62 games this season, also the third highest rate in the league. They’ve clearly struggled when they don’t, posting a record of 5-5-6.

This last five game road trip was a harsh reality of VGK’s inconsistencies. In Los Angeles, the Golden Knights outshot the Kings 25 to 19 and went on to win 6-4. Against Pittsburgh, Vegas shot the same amount pucks on net but got shutout 5-0. Although, it was a one-goal loss in Buffalo, the Golden Knights took more shots than the Sabres.

Overall, Vegas is outshooting their opponents 28.6 to 24.9. However, the number of shots taken hasn’t resulted in a stretch of quality results or even quality performances recently.

Most Losses When Outshooting Opponents Since January 1st

Florida Panthers – 9 Losses
Colorado Avalanche – 8 Losses (2 OTL)
Vegas Golden Knights – 7 Losses (1 OTL)
Edmonton Oilers – 7 Losses (1 OTL)
St. Louis Blues – 7 Losses (1 OTL)
Vancouver Canucks – 7 losses (1 OTL)
New York Islanders – 7 losses (1 OTL)

Yesterday, the opposite occurred for the Golden Knights. In their 4-3 OT win against the Red Wings, they took one fewer shot than Detroit. If they hadn’t missed the net 16 times, Vegas would have easily won the SOG race.

It was one of the rare times this season in which they were outshot in a game they trailed throughout.

The Golden Knights have defeated a playoff opponent for the first time since November 20th!

A comeback win in Detroit after digging themselves yet another hole. They’ve died by the sword a lot, but there’s no doubt they find ways to live by it too.

Shots on goal are one of the better measures of team success typically. For this year’s VGK, there’s no question they’ve been better when they do, but the payoff hasn’t been as strong as most would expect.
