Connor McDavid has shared strong praise for fellow NHL star Nathan MacKinnon after their recent experience as teammates on the international stage.
The two elite forwards spent time together on Canada men’s national ice hockey team during recent tournaments like the Winter Olympics and the 4 Nations Faceoff. At times, both players have formed one of the most dangerous lines in international hockey.

Speaking to reporters on March 5, McDavid spoke openly about what it was like to play alongside MacKinnon. The Edmonton captain said the experience only confirmed what he already believed about the Colorado star.

“What I learned obviously is he’s a great player,” McDavid said. “But, you know, I didn’t – I knew that coming in. He’s a great player, that [he’s] highly highly competitive. Loved being his teammate and not as fun going up against.”
The pair showed strong chemistry during the 4 Nations Face-Off in 2025. Canada defeated the United States men’s national ice hockey team 3-2 in overtime in the final. McDavid scored the winning goal, while MacKinnon finished the event as the tournament’s MVP.

Their partnership continued at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Coach Jon Cooper placed McDavid and MacKinnon on the same line with rookie Macklin Celebrini. The trio controlled possession with speed and skill throughout the tournament.
Despite their strong play, Canada fell 2-1 in overtime to the United States in the gold medal game. McDavid still made history by setting a record for most points by an NHL player in a single Olympic tournament with 13. He was named the MVP, while MacKinnon also impressed occasionally.

Both players continue to dominate in the NHL this season. McDavid leads the league with 105 points and 70 assists for the Edmonton Oilers. MacKinnon has also been outstanding for the Colorado Avalanche with 41 goals and 100 points.

Their teams will meet again later this season, possibly even in the playoffs. If that happens, McDavid knows exactly what challenge awaits.
After enjoying the chance to play together, the Oilers captain knows that facing MacKinnon again will not be easy.
