Colorado Avalanche Captain Gabriel Landeskog Out on Week-to-Week Basis

The Colorado captain took a shot from defenceman Cale Makar in Friday’s shootout victory over the Dallas Stars. He showed reporters his athletic cup after the game, which had a large dent from Makar’s shot, according to Corey Masiak of the Denver Post.

Landeskog has only played for the Avalanche across his 12-year NHL career. The veteran forward is back for his first regular season action after missing the last three full seasons. He’s missed multiple campaigns due to a knee injury that needed multiple surgeries, including a cartilage replacement. The 32-year-old return during last season’s Stanley Cup Playoff series with Dallas.

Landeskog has nine goals and 20 assists for 29 points in 47 games so far this season. He missed 14 games earlier in the season due to an unrelated upper-body injury. However, he did return for the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics for his native Sweden. The Avs’ captain has two goals and five assists in the six games since his return.

What It Means

The Avalanche have been playing well, but it does hurt being without their captain. Colorado has been without Landeskog for quite a while, but he’s done a great job in his first regular season back with the team.

Colorado currently has the most points in the league and is on pace to nab the President’s Trophy. However, the Avalanche need to make a deep postseason run after crashing out in the first round after winning the Stanley Cup in the 2021-22 season. The pressure is on to finally make a lengthy run and they’ll need their captain.
