As he was backstopping HC Kometo Brno to the Czech Extraliga title last spring, Detroit Red Wings prospect Michal Postava was drawing the highest of praise that a goalie in his homeland can receive. He was eliciting comparisons to Red Wings icon Dominik Hasek in his ability to get inside the heads of shooters.

In Postava’s AHL rookie campaign, Grand Rapids Griffins coach Dan Watson has seen some evidence of how Postava can become a mental block to opponents as he blocks the path of shots into his net.

“If you ask our guys, he’s the toughest goalie to score on in practice,” Watson said. “And that’s not saying (Sebastian) Cossa doesn’t (make it tough).

“But (Postava) just all of a sudden comes up with a big save when you’re not expecting it. He doesn’t quit on pucks in practice. Even when they think they have a wide-open net, here he comes diving across with a leg or a glove, and it’s like, where did that come from?

“And it’s because of his competitive nature and his athleticism.”

Postava Still A Factor In Red Wings Goalie Futures

Just last week, it was Cossa earning a brief recall as Red Wings goalie John Gibson was felled by injury. Expect Cossa to be summoned again if Gibson’s injury in Sunday’s win at New Jersey is serious enough to sideline him again.

Cossa and 2023 second-round pick Trey Augustine, currently a junior in college at Michigan State, are the first two names mentioned when discussing Detroit’s goaltending future. Don’t go counting Postava out of the picture, though.

Michal Postava returned to action for the Griffins Saturday in Chicago after missing almost two months due to injury

In 18 games for the Griffins, he shows a 1.82 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage. Postava is 12-4 with two shutouts. He’s perfect in the shootout, stopping all three shots he’s faced.

In 13 of his 18 appearances, Postava has allowed two or fewer goals.”

“He gives us a chance to win every game,” Watson said. “Really good goaltender, super athletic, really competitive, very aggressive in the net.

“He’s not old school, but just the way he moves around the crease, he’s very active. It’s something you don’t see much today. You see a lot of bigger blocking goaltenders that cover a lot of net.

“You see how he plays, and it’s fun to watch, especially when he’s as good as he is. He’s very talented, and he’s got a bright future.”
