The Edmonton Oilers entered Tuesday’s matchup against the Colorado Avalanche looking to build momentum against one of the best teams this season.
Instead, the game turned into a controversial affair after a second-period collision involving Oilers goaltender Connor Ingram and Avalanche star forward Nathan MacKinnon.

With 37 seconds remaining in the second period on a Colorado power play, MacKinnon drove toward the net after a pass from Brock Nelson.
Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse made contact with MacKinnon, and the Avalanche forward crashed into Ingram, who went down and was later seen with an open wound on his forehead.

MacKinnon was assessed a five-minute major penalty for goaltender interference on the play and after video review, the penalty was upheld, carrying an automatic game misconduct and his ejection from the game.

Colorado head coach Jared Bednar disputed the call on the ice after the game.
“There’s no chance that he hits the goalie if Nurse doesn’t run into him,” Bednar said. “I don’t care if he’s injured or not injured, it’s a severe crash or not a severe crash. It’s not a penalty.”
After the game, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch addressed Ingram’s status, confirming he’d suffered a concussion.
“Obviously, you have to protect your goalies. It wasn’t on purpose, but you have to be careful with goaltenders,” Knoblauch said. “Obviously, they lost a good player.

“It was concussion protocol. He’s feeling well. Obviously, that can change, but he was not allowed to come back just because of [the] concussion spotter.”
Ingram skated off under his own power but did not return to the game under protocol rules. Tristan Jarry, meanwhile, entered the game in relief and stopped 11 of 12 shots to help secure a 4-3 win for Edmonton.
The Oilers improved to 32-25-8 with the victory and sit second in the Pacific Division. Edmonton will visit the Dallas Stars on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. ET.
