The second half of the season has been filled with disappointing results and a lack of consistency from what was on display in the first 41 games. On Wednesday night, the Philadelphia Flyers had several players take you back to that first half.

Trevor Zegras scored the eventual game-winning goal, and Sam Ersson was solid in his first start in nearly two weeks as the Flyers secured a 4-1 win over the Washington Capitals at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

How It Happened

The Capitals opened the scoring at 9:51 on the power play. Ryan Leonard scored his 13th goal of the season on a wrist shot from the high slot.

The Flyers tied the game at 4:23 as Travis Konecny celebrated his 29th birthday in style with his 24th goal of the season.

Zegras gave the Flyers the lead at 12:13, scoring his 22nd goal of the season off a rush with Owen Tippett.

The Flyers added to the lead at 7:17 of the third. Jamie Drysdale scored from the slot during a 4-on-4, picking up his seventh goal of the season and fourth in the last 10 games to make it 3-1. Tippett iced the game with his 21st goal of the season into an empty net.

⭐ Owen Tippett —Tippett deservedly got an empty-net goal and had an assist, and it could have been even more than that. He’s been one of the few who have consistently been driving play, and his skating was at the next level in this game.

⭐⭐ Trevor Zegras —This looked like the Trevor Zegras of the first half. Dynamic play-making ability, the finishing touch on his goal off the rush, and better movement than in a lot of the other games since the return from break.

⭐⭐⭐ Sam Ersson — It had been since Feb. 26 that Sam Ersson got a start, and give him credit, he was solid from start to finish in this one. Washington scored on a screened shot on the power play in the first, and Ersson turned aside the rest of the opportunities that came his way.

The Takeaway

Give the Flyers credit, they turned their play around in the second and third to secure a win over a team that certainly entered with a lot more desperation in the standings. This was one of the better games of late for several Flyers forwards. This looked like the dynamic Trevor Zegras from the first half. Owen Tippett’s skating was on another level. And Sam Ersson had a strong game in his first start in nearly two weeks.
