Last night, Jacob Fowler made the save of the year in front of his net, but the league’s officials decided to turn a blind eye to his statistics.

Arpon Basu raised this blatant injustice this morning.

We’re talking about a gem of a play that set the web on fire all evening. The NHL certainly didn’t hesitate to use the video of the future Montreal Canadiens goaltender to boost its social media.

Yet the statistical reality was quite different once the game ended. That famous play, which left everyone stunned, was not even officially recorded as a save by the statisticians.

We can agree that it’s an insult to Jacob Fowler’s pure talent.

The young netminder gives everything he has, frustrates the opponent in spectacular fashion, but ends up with a stat line missing an obvious highlight.

The handling of the numbers is becoming a real farce. They use the young prospect for marketing, yet they can’t manage to place a simple number in the correct column.

Basu is absolutely right to say that things have gone too far with this kind of absurdity.

You can’t sell a play as a miracle on one side and treat it as a missed shot on the other.

NHL video celebrates Jacob Fowler save while official stats fail to record the play

“I thought maybe they might have revisited it this morning, but no. As noted in my story from last night, this save being celebrated by the NHL was in fact not registered as a save last night. We’ve gone too far with this stuff.”

– Arpon Basu

We ask these young players for discipline every single day. But when it’s time for the league to do its part, we end up with beginner-level calculation errors.

The future of the Montreal Canadiens largely rests on the shoulders of this giant. Seeing him deprived of a moment of statistical glory leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of fans.

Last night, we saw proof that the spectacle matters more than the truth of the game.

If the league wants to keep its credibility, it must give Jacob Fowler what rightfully belongs to him.

Let’s be honest, this is the kind of situation that frustrates any hockey fan.

We want transparency, especially when we’re talking about a prospect of the Eagles goaltender’s caliber.
