In most cases, getting the game to overtime in the second half of a back-to-back against a rested and superior team would be a victory in and of itself. But for the Philadelphia Flyers and their playoff hopes, there is no room for treasuring just one point. Wins are necessary.
Against the Minnesota Wild, the Flyers were able to come away with a gutsy victory, rallying in the third and securing a 3-2 shootout win on Thursday night.
How It Happened
The Flyers scored the lone goal of the first period with 1:25 remaining. Emil Andrae‘s shot got through Jesper Wallstedt for his second goal of the season.
The Wild tied the game at 8:39 of the second on the power play. Matt Boldy took a pass off his skate and was able to beat Dan Vladar through the five-hole for his 37th goal of the season. Minnesota got the lead with 2:10 remaining in the second as Kirill Kaprizov scored his 38th goal of the season.
The Flyers tied things back up in the third with a shorthanded blast from Owen Tippett at 7:58 for his 22nd goal of the season.
The Flyers had two power plays in overtime, 1:08 of carryover time from the third and then another minor drawn by Trevor Zegras. They were not able to convert, but scored the lone goal of the shootout as Travis Konecny provided the winner in the third round.

⭐ Owen Tippett — The Flyers aren’t enjoying a second win without the heroics of Owen Tippett, who scored a shorthanded goal in the third to tie the game. Scoring with consistency is important for his game, but he has been a commanding presence in the last handful of games, and that’s really encouraging.
⭐⭐ Travis Konecny — Konecny scored the only goal of the shootout to seal the result in the third round. All’s well that ends well, as Konecny whiffed on a two-on-one opportunity late in the third.
⭐⭐⭐ Quinn Hughes — It feels like Quinn Hughes possesses the puck for the majority of the game. Not just on the ice, but in possession of the puck. He set up both Minnesota goals with his impressive skating ability.
The Takeaway
So you’re saying there’s a chance. The Flyers got two points on a night when some of the teams they are chasing did not. Suddenly, the Flyers are within five points of the final wildcard spot after back-to-back wins. It’s still a huge longshot, but the Flyers are looking like the resilient team that wouldn’t go away for the first 41 games of the season, and there are starting to be nightly contributors that are encouraging for the future.
