The Boston Bruins (37-23-7) started strong but fell 4-3 in overtime to the New Jersey Devils (34-31-2) on Monday night at the Prudential Center in Newark.

David Pastrnak (26) scored twice, including a highlight-reel solo-effort goal, and Pavel Zacha (20) added one in his old home, but three goals in 23 minutes for the Devils kept them in the game and forced overtime.

Joonas Korpisalo made 30 saves on 34 shots but fell to 1-1-3 in his last five starts.

Scoring started at the 4:01 mark of the first period.

Henri Jokiharju directed a shot toward Jacob Markstrom, who left a rebound for David Pastrnak in the net-front. Pastrnak deked and beat Markstrom five-hole to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

Mark Kastelic and Brenden Dillon engaged in a fight; neither went down. Kastelic landed a couple of rights, and he also ate a few punches from Dillon.

Charlie McAvoy picked the puck from a falling Arseny Gritsyuk and played it forward for Viktor Arvidsson. In stride, Arvidsson entered the zone and fed it to Pavel Zacha, who crashed the net to his left. Zacha lifted the pass over Markstrom’s stick and into the goal to extend the Bruins’ first-period lead to two.

The Bruins skated into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead and an 8-6 shots advantage.

Connor Brown got the Devils on the board just 32 seconds into the second period.

Later in the period, Jack Hughes picked off his Olympic teammate, Charlie McAvoy, and the Devils had numbers going the other way. Hughes played it to Connor Brown, who fed Jesper Bratt for a one-timer that beat Korpisalo.

The Devils took control during the second period, scoring twice and putting 17 shots on Joonas Korpisalo. The Bruins had just eight.

Paul Cotter gave the Devils their first lead of the night early in the third period.

David Pastrnak needed just 102 seconds to tie the game, and he did it with a highlight-reel move.

The Devils put the Bruins on the power play twice in the last 10 minutes of the game. For 23 seconds, the penalties overlapped, and Marco Sturm used his timeout. But much like Saturday’s game in Washington, the Bruins came up empty on the power play.

The man-advantage went 0-for-3 on Monday and is now 4-for-35 (11.4%) since the Olympic break.

Mark Kastelic also fought again, taking on Johnathan Kovacevic after laying a hit on Paul Cotter. This time, Kastelic got the takedown.

For the third straight Bruins’ road game, this one needed overtime.

Charlie McAvoy hit the post with his shot, and the Devils transitioned, springing Paul Cotter on a breakaway. Cotter beat Korpisalo blocker-side with 6.2 seconds on the clock.

The Bruins are now 1-0-1 on their three-game road trip. They close the trip with a crucial Atlantic Division matchup against the Montreal Canadiens (36-20-10) on Tuesday night. The Canadiens are one point ahead of the Bruins with a game in hand.
