Top Detroit Red Wings prospect Eddie Genborg will be finishing the AHL season with the Grand Rapids Griffins. However, he won’t be looking for an apartment.
He isn’t staying that long.
Though Genborg has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Red Wings, the player Detroit chose 40th overall in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft will be returning to Sweden in the fall to complete his contractual obligations with Timrå of the SHL.
Confirming this fact was Joakim Persson, Genborg’s agent.
UPDATE: Eddie Genborg will report to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins on an amateur tryout for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

“He flies Tuesday to finish the season with Grand Rapids,” Persson told Swedish media site ST. “Then he will come home and continue his 2026/27 season with Timrå IK, and then join the Red Wings after the 26/27 season.”
Genborg’s SHL season came to an end on the weekend when Timrå failed to qualify for the playoffs. The 18-year-old right-winger enjoyed a solid first full season in Sweden’s top league. He accounted for nine goals and 16 assists. His 25-point output left him third in the league among under-20 players.
Genborg has one year remaining on a two-year pact he signed with Timrå.
Red Wings Followed a Similar Path With Johansson
Persson indicated that he had confirmed with members of the Red Wings front office that the plans for Genborg’s future are unchanged, even though he is now under contract with the Detroit organization.

“That is the intention and what we have talked about,” Persson said. “Then things can happen, but that is what we have communicated and discussed in agreement.”
The Red Wings took a similar path this season with another draft pick, defenseman Anton Johansson. Although he signed with Detroit and finished last season in the AHL with the Griffins, Johansson returned to Leksands of the SHL in the fall after attending Red Wings training camp.
Leksands and HV71 are ready to meet in the SHL relegation playoff. The expectation is that Johansson will join the Griffins once he completes his SHL commitment.
