While Andrew Copp isn’t Dylan Larkin, the importance of him rejoining the Detroit Red Wings’ lineup sooner than expected should not be underestimated.

Coach Todd McLellan said after today’s morning skate that Copp’s playing status will be gametime decision before Detroit’s game against Montreal tonight.

The way the Red Wings coaches view this is Copp helps this team in a variety of different ways, including serving as the team’s No. 2 center between Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane. It might surprise you to know that Copp has more assists (29) than Larkin (27). Coaches appreciate Copp as well for his defensive play and his penalty killing. Last season, the team’s late-season struggles coincided with a Copp injury.

Michael Brandsegg-Nygard is also close. Dylan Larkin skated this morning, but he has not been cleared for contact.

The Detroit players view Copp’s return as a major event. The Eastern Conference race is so tight enough that every player matters.
