They keep hanging around. The Philadelphia Flyers had a quick turnaround on this West Coast trip and turned in another gutsy performance, securing a 4-3 shootout win over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.
How It Happened
The Kings dominated possession in the first period and finally cashed in to take the lead in the final minute of the period. Quinton Byfield got open in the slot and scored his 14th goal of the season to make it 1-0.
Just 26 seconds into the second, the Flyers tied the game off the rush as Travis Konecny finished off his 25th goal of the season. The 1-1 tie lasted just 21 seconds, as the Kings regained the lead on Anze Kopitar‘s 11th of the season at 47 seconds.
The Flyers tied the game again at 4:12 with Noah Cates digging away at a loose puck in the crease for his 14th goal of the season. Just under three minutes later, Travis Sanheim put a shot through a screen and scored his seventh of the season to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead.
The Kings tied the game at three on the power play at 10:28 of the third. Artemi Panarin scored his 23rd of the season through a screen.
The game went to the shootout, where the Flyers got goals in both rounds from Trevor Zegras and Matvei Michkov while Sam Ersson stopped both Kings’ attempts.

⭐ Travis Sanheim — Really impressive performance from Sanheim, who scored the third goal for the Flyers, but was very steady defensively while playing 26:54.
⭐⭐ Matvei Michkov — A multi-point game for Michkov, who got two assists in the second period with hard work and secured the result in the shootout.
⭐⭐⭐ Sam Ersson — Ersson last started the front end of last week’s back-to-back against the Capitals and was solid. He allowed three goals, but made some timely saves to clean up mistakes by the Flyers. And Ersson was once again lights out in the shootout.
The Takeaway
The beat goes on for the Flyers, who have now won six of nine games in March and have an 8-3-1 record since returning from the Olympic break. Unfortunately, it hasn’t resulted in much of a gain in the standings, still five points back of third in the Metro and six points back in the wildcard, but they continue to string together positive results. What’s really impressive is that this is now twice in consecutive weeks that the Flyers have won both ends of a back-to-back.
