A.J. Greer will be having a hearing with the NHL Player Safety Department.

Greer was thrown out of Friday night’s game between the Florida Panthers and Calgary Flames at the Saddledome after a dangerous hit on Flames winger Connor Zary.

It was an ugly incident that also earned Greer a five-minute major for boarding. Zary had his back to Greer and was driven head-first into the boards and there were immediate calls for a lengthy suspension across social media in the aftermath of the hit.

“Terrible hit, it was awful,” said Flames head coach Ryan Huska. “I don’t really have much more to say about that, it just shouldn’t happen when someone is in that position, ever.”

Greer has previously been suspended one game for cross-checking in March 2023 while he was playing with the Boston Bruins. He spent the following season with the Flames before joining the Panthers.

Zary skated off the ice on his own but left the game and did not return.

“I don’t have an update,” Huska said post-game. “He’s moving around, he’s fine and all that stuff, but I don’t really have a real indication of what it is yet.”
