The era of William Nylander as an ‘untouchable’ pillar of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization is officially over.
Following a season defined by a 26th-place slide and a complete lack of physical response to the Auston Matthews injury, the front office is reportedly at a breaking point.
During a recent episode of Real Kyper & Bourne, Sportsnet’s Luke Fox dropped a massive hint about the locker room’s future, revealing that management is actively questioning if the $92-million winger is part of their long-term future plans.
The report is vague, leaving the hockey community with little to go on, but opens the door for the possibility that Toronto considers dealing Nylander.
From someone like Fox connected to the team and less of someone to speculate, it comes with more authority that the Leafs are facing a real decision on if they view Nylander as a long-term piece anymore.

William Nylander hasn’t done anything wrong in Toronto, and that may be why he could be on his way out in the future.
Nylander has been the Leafs rock this season, having a team leading 64 points, 24 goals and 40 assists, in 53 games. It’s been Nylander leading the show for Toronto.
While Auston Matthews is sidelined with a Grade 3 MCL tear, Morgan Rielly is seeing his trade value crater, and John Tavares aging, Nylander remains Toronto’s gold mine.
Nylander might be the culture shift that Toronto views as a fix, but at the same time he’s been the one holding the culture down. While Matthews is injured, Marner is gone, Rielly is underperforming and Tavares is aging, it’s Nylander who’s remained the foundation.
If anything, it’s William Nylander that Toronto would want to build around long-term, but desperate for a solution, that value could just force him out so the Leafs can start over new.
