The news Sunday was unsurprising. Defenseman Ryan Shea will not play Sunday against the Carolina Hurricanes and is out day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
At the moment, the news sounds like the best-case scenario after Winnipeg Jets center Adam Lowry’s high hit knocked Shea out of the game in the second period Saturday. Shea reappeared on the bench to start the third period wearing a full face shield, but did not play and did not stay on the bench long.
Shea has posted career numbers this season, scoring four goals with 24 assists in a career-high 69 games.
To fill his spot in the lineup, the Penguins activated and will insert left-handed D-man Ryan Graves into the lineup.
The team recalled Graves from his conditioning assignment with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins last week. This season, Graves has spent time with both the Penguins and WBS, playing in 19 NHL games.
Ville Koivunen
The Penguins demoted forward Ville Koivunen Sunday. He was a healthy scratch in the last two Penguins games after an uneven road trip with notable bursts of play, but offset by regressions, too.
Koivunen, 22, has appeared in 33 games this season with two goals and seven points.
Gabriel D’Aigle
Saturday, the Penguins signed prospect goalie Gabriel D’Aigle, 19, to an entry-level contract. The team selected the 6-foot-4 goalie from the QMJHL in the third round of the 2025 NHL Draft (84th overall).
D’Aigle has been the backbone of the under-manned Victoriaville Tigres, so his numbers have not matched his performance. In 39 games this season, D’Aigle has a 14-21-3 record but a healthy .908 save percentage.
D’Aigle performed well in the Penguins’ development camp in July 2025, shortly after the draft, earning promising marks in scouting reports from Pittsburgh Hockey Now.
