Detroit’s 5-2 triumph over Buffalo Saturday was overwhelmingly important because it put the Red Wings back in the mix for a playoff spot.
But now tonight’s home game against the Philadelphia Flyers is the Red Wings’ most important game of the season. Detroit faces the Flyers three times over their last 10 games.
Now one point out of a playoff position, the Red Wings probably need to win at least two of those games to compete for one of the wildcard spots. The Flyers represent a major test for the Red Wings: they are 7-2-1 in their last 10. They have given up two or fewer goals in six of those games. Plus, they were in Detroit resting Saturday night while the Red Wings were battling hard to earn the 5-2 win in Buffalo.
That win against Buffalo marked only the third time in the last 20 games that the Red Wings managed to score four or more goals. Coach Todd McLellan’s team has to find more goals in the final 10 games.
